Out with the Old; In with the New!
I don't think I can be more "Dog,"
But I wouldn't mind being more Batman.
He really is (was) an innovator.

My old desk, was emptied of all its treasures, today, October 24, 2016.
It had become a mini-attic of teacher detritus, including such oddities as
a slide rule, an odd and nameless trophy, and something none of my students recognized: a backup disk.

Going... going... GONE!
No one recognized the slide rule or the backup disk. My shelf is gradually being emptied of
They must be antiques!! its treasures. Most have found new homes--
even if that new home is the recycle bin.

Closets are being emptied for a not-so-secret, but very much anticipated new study cave.
Going........ Going........ GONE!
I felt brave enough to remove one of my magnetized chalk boards to see what lurked beneath.
November 2, 2016: Students voted with their feet today,
after discussing how different colors set moods or tones in a room.
I had surveyed them before, and distilled the choices down to yellow (pastel), light blue, light green, grey, or beige.
Results are in order of preference: Light blue 49 votes
Grey 45 votes
Light green 6 votes
Beige 4 votes
Yellow 4 votes.
(Some students were absent, so they did not get to vote.)

The" Big Guns" came in to condemn my cupboard doors. No red xs, just my borrowed masking tape to seal their fates.
Now I am wondering if I should not just lose two more doors to allow easy access to necessary supplies for all of my students. It's just that I would probably need new bins--most of these are older than my students' parents! (circa 1967) |
Nov. 9, I removed one of the doors (knocked it right off its little hinges) just so I could live with the cupboard without a door and see if it really was a great idea to give full view and accessiblity of the bins to the students and to me.
Wednesday, November 23, 2016, right after school, I was allowed to witness a real-life "demo," aka demolition, of the condemned cupboard space. I'd like to fib and say I participated, but I was not allowed to swing a sledge hammer, yet!
Tabulate and Speculate, then Extrapolate!
RESA very kindly sent me the Excel sheets on the results from my student surveys.
I was actually surprised by some of the answers

Our classes are very excited and filled with anticipation with the idea(s) of our transition during Spring Break.
We are trying to identify and anticipate problems and concerns regarding the care and use of our new furnishings.

We are trying to identify and anticipate problems and concerns regarding the care and use of our new furnishings.
Questions my classes have raised are:
- How are we going to get to decide who sits where and for how long?
- How should we report a problem (breakage, discoloration, stain, etc.)?
- How should we maintain and care for our new stuff?
- What should we expect our room to look like at the end of the hour/ end of the day?
- What is the best way to reconfigure our furnishings for different activities.
- What do we do with our stuff now that we do not have desks?
- What if I do not like my new seating arrangements?
- How do we care for the new white boards?
- Are there rules for using the "cozy corner?"
